What is mindfulness, really? What does it look like to practice and live more spiritual, intentional lives? And where does Judaism intersect with mindfulness? Join Cantor Sara Hass and Rabbi Scott Goldberg for a three-part series exploring the fundamentals of Jewish mindfulness through body, mind, and soul. Our sessions will support a variety of learning modalities: we will introduce practical techniques such as traditional seated meditation sits; we will embody alternative methods such as mindful walking, mindful listening, and mindful eating; and we will ground our learning in texts, music, poetry, and wisdom from renowned teachers of Jewish mindfulness. Whether you are brand new to mindfulness or seeking to deepen your spiritual practice, this series offers an accessible entry point into living with greater awareness and heart, and to do so as part of our Mindful LBT Leo Baeck Temple community.

Session 1: What is Mindfulness, and Why Do We Make Such a Big Deal About It?

Join us for a thought-provoking and experiential session exploring the meaning and value of mindfulness through a Jewish lens. We'll unpack what mindfulness really is, why it has become such a central focus in both secular and spiritual spaces, and how it connects with Jewish tradition and practice. We will begin to engage in simple guided sitting practices to help you experience mindfulness firsthand. No prior experience necessary—just bring your curiosity and an open heart.

Session 2: Jewish Mindfulness in Motion: Beyond the Chair

Jewish mindfulness isn’t just about sitting still—it’s about showing up fully in every moment of life. Join us for an engaging exploration of Jewish mindfulness practices that go beyond traditional meditation. From mindful walking and sacred listening to intentional eating and embodied awareness, this session blends ancient Jewish wisdom with modern mindfulness techniques.

Session 3: Lessons from Contemporary Teachers of Jewish Mindfulness

Who are the thinkers, spiritualists, artists, and teachers shaping Jewish mindfulness today? In this session, we’ll explore the work and practices of five influential figures: Jonathan Slater, Shefa Gold, Sheila Peltz Weinberg, Alan Morinis, and Jack Kornfield. Together, we will study text, experience guided practices, and reflect on what speaks most powerfully to us as we build our own spiritual toolkit.
